Abstract

Contemporary society is moving towards a "networked mobile society" with the subsequent transformation of communicative processes in cities.

This new scenario is characterised by having public places where digital information coexists alongside the physical space. In these cities, which are covered by wireless telecommunication networks, people are able to send and receive data using portable devices. Likewise, satellite positioning systems have also been made available, offering people the chance to increase their vision and ability to locate themselves geographically.

This text proposes an approach to open social networks and projects linked to locative media technologies within the context of cultural practices. It is to explore two aspects of this relationship; firstly, that involved in projects that allow for the creation of open telecommunication networks, networks that are parallel to the internet and created by citizens; and secondly, that found in the framework of the possibilities offered by social and artistic activities based on these infrastructures. In other words, these are proposals that explore the intrinsic control systems of these technologies.

A new data transmission ecosystem is forming in cities and artistic practices are questioning the protocols for living together in these new urban developments that have been mapped in their entirety by digital systems.
