A perspective, one that is neither exclusive nor excludes, is presented on tourism[1] in (for/through) the Information and Knowledge Society. We analyse the transformation the tourism system[2] is undergoing, as well as the trends, opportunities, challenges and difficulties that it faces, as a result of a series of forces and circumstances that affect it. A transformation that is due both to the fact that we are seeing a period of uncertainty in the sector and to general changes in society. We review the general characteristics of the tourism system (an adaptation of the Leiper model), as the conceptual framework for this whole line of work.
Analysis is made of the driving forces behind the tourism model: both of emerging new tourism in the Information Society, from the twin angles of the transformation of mature destinations and the changing business model in the sector. We suggest three basic elements of these: innovation and the use of ICT, quality throughout the sector, and sustainability-quality of life for residents and visitors.
These trends are explained, among other reasons, by reference to public policies at international (TWO, WTTC), regional (European Union), and Spanish state level (and, within Spain, in the different autonomous communities), both in relation to the Information Society and to the tourism sector itself. We also refer briefly, and expand in detail in our treatment of the different specific activities, to the guidelines and stimuli they receive from the major professional associations in relation to the different activities that comprise the industry.
Finally, we present the treatment this product line receives at the UOC, a treatment that focuses on strategy, brand image, objectives and actions; products; and alliances at state and international levels.
