A language beyond politics: The poetry of J.V.Foix
ABSTRACT:
The position occupied by J V Foix in the world of Catalan letters has always been of the highest order. However, this poet has also been prominent in the field of politics. Quite apart from his creative contribution to the cause of the autochthonous culture, Foix participated fully as a journalist in the arena of the pre-war debate as to the possibilities of Catalan autonomy. This paper seeks to outline the career of the writer in this area before moving on to comment on the relevance of his creative output in the dark night of the Francoist repression of the post-war years.

ABSTRACT:

Subversive Empathy: Marià Manent in Exile in the Land of Chinese Poetry
ABSTRACT:
There can be little doubt of the importance of the contribution of Marià Manent to the defence and promotion of Catalan culture in the course of this century. This translator, of international stature and prestige, was responsible for the enrichment of the autochthonous experience by the quality of his renderings in Catalan of a whole series of literary giants. In circumstances of monolingual 'normality' it may be commonplace to assume that the desire to translate a given writer stems purely from a fascination with the original text - a process which might be epitomised, say, by the case of Ezra Pound. Not surprisingly, perhaps, in Catalonia the activity may become circumscribed by an environmental dimension which leaves its mark on the whole practice. It is the intention of this essay to approach the trajectory of Manent's professional encounter with Chinese verse in this light and consider the possible influence of these all to familiar external criteria on the exercise of tranlstion.
