The specialist course on Technical requirements of the information society for telemedicine is part of the postgraduate in e-health, included in the Master's in Telemedicine. With its cross-cutting approach, the course has been designed as an introduction to the use of ICTs in health systems. First of all, it provides a critical reflection on the importance and influence of the healthcare context as a feature of healthcare information. This is extremely important for the effective application of ICTs in healthcare processes. Secondly, it pays close attention to the following: the series of transformations undergone by health systems as a result of the introduction of ICTs, exploring the diverse possibilities of telemedicine through the Internet; decision-making in healthcare organisations in a bid to improve the healthcare continuum; channels of communication and technologies that enable synchronous and asynchronous action and action focusing on the health problem being treated; the changing role of the diverse actors in the healthcare system; the possibilities of distance training; the concept of a system based around a network of organisations and the concept of knowledge being shared across a network. It deals with the various security mechanisms that need to be taken into account in the new medical services based on telemedicine. These include guaranteeing correct access to and the availability of the diverse resources to users explicitly authorised for this purpose, and maintaining complete, up-to-date information available from the different points of access. It looks at the concepts of interoperability and standardisation as two basic concepts in constant evolution over recent years, which constitute a strategic challenge for the healthcare system today. It analyses the most important standards, dealing with their currency, medical applicability and current problems. Lastly, the course uses a critical approach in its study of the essential minimum requirements for application of the new medical services based on telemedicine.

The specialist course on Technical requirements of the information society for telemedicine is a mixed course (covering both research and vocational aspects) designed and structured as an academic itinerary, which means that students can enrol in their own time, in accordance with their personal interests and the time they have available for study. It also facilitates gradual access to qualification in line with the choices of the individual student.
