The postgraduate course on e-health is part of the Master's in Telemedicine. It has been designed and structured as an academic itinerary, which means that participants can access a type of training that suits their needs by enrolling on subjects that match their specific interests and the time they have available to study. The course program consists of a postgraduate for 30 credits and 2 specialist courses, worth 12 credits each.
The e-health postgraduate course provides the tools for a cross-cutting approach to the theoretical possibilities of telemedicine, based on a contextual understanding of health, healthcare systems and the information society, and a critical reflection on the management of information and clinical knowledge and the changes ushered in by the use of ICTs. Firstly, it takes a rigorous look at healthcare systems by studying diverse European health systems. In doing so, it covers key areas of responsibility and the legal issues affecting medical practice. It analyses the role of ICTs in social transformation and in the doctor-patient relationship, configuring a global health model based on globality, cross-cutting issues, networks and the individual. It provides a critical reflection on the various forms and characteristics that medical records have incorporated throughout their history and the changes ushered in by the use of ICTs. The course also deals with the importance and influence of the healthcare context as a feature of health information and how it affects the management of information, communication and medical practice. In addition, it pays special attention to the series of transformations undergone by health systems as a result of the introduction of ICTs, exploring the diverse possibilities of telemedicine – through use of the Internet – in decision-making, communication channels and technologies allowing synchronous and asynchronous action, the changing role of diverse actors in the healthcare system, the possibilities of distance training, the concept of a system based around a network of organisations and the concept of knowledge being shared across a network. It deals with different concepts that need to be taken into account in the new medical services based on telemedicine, such as interoperability and standardisation, different security mechanisms, keys aspects of responsibility and legal aspects of medicine. Lastly, the course makes a critical reflection on the essential minimum requirements for implementing new medical services based on telemedicine.
The programme includes the possibility of a grant to carry out projects at centres of renowned international prestige.
Professionals taking part in this programme may contribute the following skills to their organisation in their present and future roles and positions:
- Understanding of the challenges and opportunities of health systems in a globalising context and climate of sociodemographic, epidemiological, scientific and technical change.
- Understanding of the importance of access to healthcare knowledge and assessment of the contribution of ICTs to health systems in the framework of the information and knowledge society.
- Ability to successfully incorporate ICTs as an option for continuous on-line training and access to expert knowledge in an existing medical centre.
- Ability to direct processes of technological innovation and improvements in healthcare systems, defining the role and responsibilities of the agents of the system while taking into account the different interrelations between them and pinpointing the information needs of healthcare.
