Bioinformatics is now one of the most dynamic fields of science and one of those with the greatest projection. The discipline is mid-way between molecular biology, IT and statistics, and allows the use of computers to investigate the biology of our molecules.
The main applications for bioinformatics are simulation, data mining and the analysis of data obtained in genome (Human Genome Project) or proteome projects.
Since the end of the 1960s, when collection of the first protein sequences began, creating the first molecular biology databases, numerous discoveries have accelerated scientific development. A clear example of this is the Human Genome Sequencing Project, our own genetic sequence. However, none of these advances would have been possible without the intensive use of computers.
On completion of the first genome projects and the extensive possibilities offered by this new information, many scientific fields have witnessed a boom both in the conception of new experiments and in the generation of striking results.
The emergence of these lines of research and development has led to a high demand for experts in this multidisciplinary field, and it is in this context that the UOC is offering this postgraduate diploma in Bioinformatics.
