The Master's in ICT systems and health is a mixed course, covering both research and vocational aspects, developed in the framework of the European space for higher education. Its purpose is to introduce professionals from the ICT and health sectors to the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in healthcare processes.
The introduction of ICTs in the health sector has been and still is one of the challenges of the new society of knowledge. Healthcare activities use ICTs very intensively in every aspect but in health systems on the whole – public health, hospital management, healthcare continuum, medical records, pharmacological history, clinical sessions, etc. – this intensive use goes no further than the clinical act per se. As a result, the ICTs play a very small part in the socialisation of knowledge.
The use of ICTs in healthcare and management processes in the framework of communication and information transfer systems is not as common a practice as it is in other sectors. This lack of intensity in the use of ICT systems is starting to change, thus generating great demand for professionals who can successfully introduce ICT best practices in healthcare and health management processes.
The UOC's Master's in ICT systems and health is aimed at promoting the generation and transfer of knowledge with the use of ICT tools in order to manage communication and information in the health sector, emphasising the transformative ability of the latter and the mechanisms for the continuous promotion of improvements to healthcare processes.
Thus, on completion of the Master's course, students will be in an excellent position to design, implement and effectively evaluate the contributions made by the introduction of ICT systems in diverse areas of the health system.
Professionals taking part in the programme may contribute the following skills to their organisation in their present and future roles and positions:
- Knowledge and skills in the organisational impact of ICT systems on healthcare organisations. Development of change management skills, project management methodologies, process re-engineering and quality management and information security. Basic aspects of tools for the design and management of scorecards and business intelligence.
- Identification of the key strategic and support processes of healthcare organisations and of the basic requirements of ICT systems for optimisation of the latter. Structuring and evaluation of cost-benefit structures in the implementations of these systems.
- Contributions of ICT systems to the relationship between citizens and professionals – portal of professionals and citizens – in healthcare processes, whether in collaborative contexts or in access to health information.
- Understanding of systems for the exchange of information and standards associated with the areas of collaboration between local, autonomous, state and international health systems.
