In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in the creation and consolidation of non-profit organisations of various sizes, with diverse objectives and different scopes of action. Spain is taking on greater commitments with social problems, so it needs to channel and structure its desire to collaborate with social organisations. Over a million volunteers currently carry out altruistic actions. According to data from the Secretary of State for Social Affairs, Family and Disability, there are approximately 15,000 organisations carrying out social action in Spain, which illustrates how important they have become in recent years.

More often than not, these organisations are managed by individuals who are dedicated or committed to the company's goals but have not had the opportunity to undergo specific training for this purpose. It is important to provide tools to renew the current systems of management in the non-profit sector, working to improve its responsibility and efficacy using systems of continuous improvement. Companies of the third sector need to incorporate creative and innovative models in their management and pay special attention to individuals, since they constantly need to make adjustments and strive to improve the work carried out by the combination of volunteers and paid staff.

The quality of the actions carried out by non-profit organisations (NPOs) depends largely on their staff, be they volunteers or remunerated. All staff must receive the right training to perform their daily tasks more effectively and with greater standards of quality.

The Spanish Red Cross considers it necessary to provide quality training to all those wishing to join these organisations and most especially to those with responsibilities in executive positions, whose basic training needs include management, planning and managerial skills. The individuals in charge of NPOs must acquire managerial and leadership skills to help them manage their resources with maximum efficacy. Thus, the idea is to enhance the training of people who carry out or would like to carry out management tasks in NPOs.

Lastly, given current training needs, schedules, the scarcity of free time and long working hours, it is necessary to provide methodological alternatives for this training. The Spanish Red Cross needs to take advantage of the force of new technologies and their growing incorporation in modern society to adapt this training to the needs of the population.

This training programme qualifies students to carry out the strategic management of an NPO, providing them with the knowledge and skills to do so.
