On 10 December 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In its preamble, it states that the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. The same text promoted a moral mandate for all public and private organisations. The human rights listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were to serve as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations,
“to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance”.
The Law and Political Science Studies at UOC in association with the Institute of Human Rights of Catalonia (IDHC) have decided to heed this mandate by creating this postgraduate programme in Human Rights, Democracy and Conflicts. With this new postgraduate degree, we aim to meet the increasing need of specialists in human rights and democracy in our society who can incorporate basic categories of human rights and democracy, such as equality, freedom, solidarity or the principle of respect of human dignity, in the practice of their professions in the private or public sectors.
This UOC-IDHC degree is sponsored by the Generalitat’s Office for the Promotion of Peace and Human Rights, which advocated for the creation of this degree with the support of different Catalan universities and organisations: Ombudsman of Catalonia, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, the Rovira i Virgili University and the University of Gerona. The broad participation and institutional collaboration that supports this educational initiative allows us to work with the best professionals and lecturers from this field of study.
This programme aims to
a) offer the students a deep insight into human rights and democracy;
b) create a solid competence to incorporate the value of human rights and democracy in multiple ambits of professional endeavour (education, law firms, company consulting, human resources, cooperation NGOs etc.)
