The Islamic civilisation, to which one in five people across the world belong, regardless of their ethnicity, culture or place of origin, remains a mystery for many of us, despite the studies conducted by orientalists and scholars of Islam in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Europe is currently witnessing a decline in the courses offered on Islamic studies and Arabic language study. In the Muslim world itself, learning is subject to ideological considerations or limited to the traditional approach.
Over at least five centuries (from the eighth to the thirteenth), Islam has taken part in the formation of the Mediterranean civilisation. The Muslim world, constantly affected by controversy and disputes concerning political conflicts and security issues – with which we share many goals and interests – deserves to be made the object of scientific study.
The origin of the conflict is often ignorance, the cause of the "clash of civilisations" and poor cultural exchange. Experiences such as the Barcelona process, which led to the Barcelona-based Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, or the crisis of modernity (which is not limited to finance), and issues such as immigration, globalisation, the geographical proximity of the two cultures and the need to relearn how to work and live together are just some of the reasons why it is interesting to study the religion, civilisation, societies, cultures, language, arts, economics and geopolitics of the Muslim world.
The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya seeks to contribute to this task of education, research and acquisition of knowledge through its interdisciplinary scientific programme and the support and participation of international experts.
