The changes in social and economic structure of recent decades have had an impact on the urban fabric of metropolitan regions. The large expanses of territory left in disuse as a result of industrial relocation or new infrastructure demands and degraded historical centres now constitute challenges for urban planning, which needs to reconfigure urban inland areas. Beyond mere traditional urban planning, new mechanisms of management need to include a strategic vision of the land and a more complex methodology with the participation of more urban agents (civil society, private sector, etc.), in order to resolve the conflicts sparked by the diverse interests generated in the area. In addition, the offer of public space and a landscape of quality is now one of the key issues of municipal agendas for meeting the demands of citizens and giving modern cities added value.
At the end of the course, students will have learned the skills they need to work in public or private bodies on the management, planning and design of networks of city projects, public space and urban landscape.
