Cities need to anticipate urban development and create strategies to adapt urban supply to the conditions for stimulating economic growth, sustainability and social cohesion.
This course describes the processes for drafting urban strategies, outlining them in projects and programmes, and organising the main actors. It analyses the urban spaces and infrastructures supporting economic activity and emerging activities and looks at their urban requirements, in addition to urban marketing. Clusters, industrial estates and business parks and their relationship with city planning. It also pays special attention to the planning of commerce, tourism and services of quality as typical elements of the urban economy. Lastly, it deals with three important topics: poverty, informality and the generation of employment.
In recent years, city economies have been affected by processes of rapid change due to globalisation, increased competition between regions, the death of many traditional activities – particularly industrial – and the need to modernise infrastructures. Local governments have adopted the role of “social producers” – and not only of reproduction and exchange. Exchange mechanisms have also multiplied in relocations and opportunities for attracting new activities. Agencies for strategic planning, economic promotion and employment generation have all been set up. The number of programmes dealing with poverty has increased. Social and sustainability criteria have been incorporated into urban projects.
At the end of this course, students will have the skills to work in the new professions created to carry out all these functions.
