Cities are clearly a phenomenon in expansion both from a demographic point of view and from the perspective of land occupation. The current model of urban growth is causing major environmental dysfunctions. Many of the socioeconomic and environmental problems of our planet originate in the big urban agglomerations. These dysfunctions not only affect our natural environment, but they also generate marginalisation and serious social problems in big metropolises. We are on the edge of an ecological crisis that is begging for a change in model based on concepts such as fairness, solidarity and equality; in short, one based on sustainability.
The course will provide students with the skills needed to work in public or private bodies on city management and environmental planning, as well as to control and develop Local Agenda 21 processes.
