What kind of safety is possible?
In other words, what can we do to formulate a type of safety that will not signify the end of freedom and justice?
Firstly, we need to develop a wider and more detailed approach, encompassing the entire process of the production of social insecurity across the planet. This will allow us, on the one hand, to understand the conditions in which conflicts and risks are generated as well as the processes that determine their materialisation into violence and disaster, respectively; and, on the other, it will provide us with a map of the situation in which to devise effective public safety policies.
Understanding the dynamics leading to this social insecurity in order to generate sustainable security (i.e. one that is compatible with freedom and justice) requires taking ideas from a wide range of disciplines: political science, economy, sociology and psychology and criminology, to name but a few.
It also requires us to look beyond academic and bureaucratic limitations and merge these sources of skills by encouraging interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary thinking, in addition to the development of a common language.
Lastly, it requires a fertile compromise between thought and action that, through a combination of action-based thinking and thoughtful action, will enable us to overcome the mechanistic schema of technocratic thinking, which always seeks to provide solutions without first identifying the cause.
