Changes experienced by society in the last decades, particularly the generalisation of access to IT tools and to the Internet, have determined that the amount of data that specialists in areas such as molecular biology or medicine can handle has remarkably increased. Disciplines such as genomics, image analysis or data warehousing are experiencing a great boost thanks to the growing and economical possibility of generating and handling large amounts of data to work with. This situation also promotes the growth of IT applications that can automate data processing and highlights the need for statistical and quantitative methods expertise for data analysis and for interpreting results. There is a need for professionals that can solve formal and practical problems arising from the management and analysis of biological data. Many life sciences and health care professionals need to acquire skills to face the new challenges presented by the use and statistical process of large amounts of data. This postgraduate programme tries to meet the need for professionals with data process and analysis skills in the fields of biostatistics and bioinformatics.
