Seeing a GPS in a car, looking up an address using Google Maps or finding an address in a town council web page have become common nowadays. These are only some applications, albeit the most popular, of geographical information systems (GIS) and geomatics. Their use is widespread and it plays a key role in many and varied sectors of the economy: from fire management in a fire brigade, to pipe management in a gas utility company, going through land survey maps or even land analysis to support an archaeological theory.
The wide range covered by GISs, the possibilities offered by the new geographical information web sites, such as Google Maps or OGC services and the decrease in prices of these services have extended the use of GISs and the demand for professionals in these fields.
The UOC is offering this specialisation programme with the aim of preparing professionals that can find new opportunities and applications for geographical information systems.
This postgraduate programme in geographical information systems will develop students skills to enable them to:
- work with geographical information,
- detect situations in which GISs can be a solution,
- design GIS applications and
- program GIS applications.
