Centre for Modern Languages Methodology

We learn languages in real-life settings, when we meet speakers of other languages, read street signs, write emails, search online or ask for information from businesses in other countries. The UOC Centre for Modern Languages uses a methodology that seeks to recreate these settings and produce teaching that focuses on action and participation while also covering the grammar.

The UOC combines the flexibility of e-learning with top quality academic teaching. The UOC's language teaching is based on oral and written activities that students engage in individually and in groups. Courses are organized to let students study at their own pace, without the need to travel or adhere to a set timetable.

The Centre for Modern Languages provides tools, such as Langblog and Tandem, which have been developed as part of the European SpeakApps project led by the UOC. These tools enable students to practise all the skills they need to master a language.

Teaching

Teaching

The teacher who accompanies students in their studies at the UOC is called a course instructor. They are responsible for motivating students, leading and assessing learning, and answering any doubts and queries. They also guide them, helping them progress and answering all their questions about the content or methodology. All the feedback on activities is personalized. As well as observing the group, the instructor also proposes specific activities to improve students' oral and written skills.

Practice makes perfect. With this in mind, each course has specific activities for group work. Students are organized into groups of 2, 3 or 4 people. In these groups, the students have to use the language they are studying to complete tasks, solve problems and overcome the challenges faced in real-life situations. The groups communicate using Skype or writing tools such as Wikispaces.

Assessment

Assessment

The Centre for Modern Languages uses a continuous assessment system which, rather than measuring each student's performance at a specific time, encourages and accompanies them throughout their learning process. Each course organizes the semester into a series of continuous assessment activities that cover oral and written skills and combine individual and group tasks. The web-based materials help students prepare for these activities.

Each activity has a guide with all the necessary instructions and details on how much of the overall mark is assigned to each task. To successfully pass the course, students need to submit each activity on time and achieve a minimum average mark of 5 out of 10. In some cases, students will also have to pass an on-site final test.

The Centre for Modern Languages adapts to your needs. You do not have to travel or keep to a set timetable. Bear in mind, however, that not having a set timetable means that you need to be able to manage your time well.
