Round table: "Open Access to Research Outputs"

30/05/2017
UOC Research Showcase 2017

Even though the Open Access movement began more than 15 years ago, it has yet to consolidate itself among the scientific community. It is a global initiative which promotes the idea that research outputs are freely available to all those who could benefit from them. Its adoption has been slow given that this requires certain challenges and barriers to be overcome, by both institutions and researchers.

In the debate on open access to research outputs, researchers should be given more say. Often they are represented by the institution they work for even though, as generators of knowledge, their position is fundamental in this entire process. How does open access affect the research task? What role should researchers play as producers and users of the output? What are the benefits and drawbacks of open access? What good practices can be adopted to comply with open access mandates?

As part of the UOC Research Showcase 2017, the UOC is opening up debate on open access at the round table Open Access to Research Outputs, which will take place on 31 May at the CosmoCaixa in Barcelona (Carrer d'Isaac Newton, 26), from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Registration for this activity, which will be held in English, is free of charge via this website.

Presented by Pastora Martínez, UOC Vice President for Globalization and Cooperation, and moderated by Nadja Gmelch – Head of Globalization and Cooperation projects – this round table will be attended by various members of the UOC, who will discuss the following aspects of open access to research outputs in order to analyse the role of researchers:

●     Clara Riera, of UOC Library Services for Research: Open Access at the UOC.

●     Ismael Peña, professor at the UOC Faculty of Law and Political Science: Making Open Access Work for your Research Impact.

●     Marina Di Masso, project manager of PERFORM, of the research group Urban Transformation and Global Change Laboratory (TURBA Lab), attached to the IN3: Building a Data Management Plan, the PERFORM experience.

●     Ángel A. Juan, professor at the UOC Faculty of Computer Science, Multimedia and Telecommunications and researcher with the research group Distributed Parallel and Collaborative Systems - Internet Computing & Systems Optimization (DPCS-ICSO), attached to the IN3: From Greedy Open Access to Sustainable Open Access: When Being Open is Not Enough.
