The path towards more ecological building
Everything points to the fact that the severe economic crisis will lead society to a more ecological and healthier, as well as worthy, form of building. Or at least that's what Toni Marín, director and editor of the journal EcoHabitar, and Jordi Badia, ecoarchitect and graduate in Cooperative Economy and Sustainable Development, put forward during the talk "Housing, sustainable options of a fundamental right", organised by the UOC's School of Cooperation and Gaia Education, on 26 April in Barcelona.

Arcadi Oliveres and Jil van Eyle see crisis as opportunity for change
The talk entitled “Opportunities for change to a sustainable economy” attracted around a hundred people to the Catalan Guild of Journalists on 23 February. And it was well worth it, as the economists Arcadi Oliveres and Jil van Eyle were invited to analyse the possibilities for change brought on by the economic crisis in Europe as part of the “Time of crisis, time of opportunity” lecture series organised by the UOC School for Cooperation and International Graduate Institute.

The IPB and the Campus for Peace start a course on disarmament
More than 1700 billion dollars are spent each year in the world in the military sector that could be invested in the fight against mass poverty, people’s development and adaptation to climate change. In order to change this situation, the International Peace Bureau (IPB) and the UOC Campus for Peace are starting up an online programme called Disarmament for Development, running 17 April 2012.

Enrolment open for the School for Cooperation master's degree and postgraduate courses
The School for Cooperation has opened the period for enrolment for the master’s degree, postgraduate and specialisation courses on conflictology, humanitarian action, dependency, international humanitarian law, management of non-profit organisations and sustainability offered by the UOC’s International Graduate Institute (IGI). The courses will start on 21 March.

Haiti backs online university education
Sixty-six Haitian faculty are to study on the Training for Trainers online course developed and coordinated by the UOC’s Campus for Peace in collaboration with the University of Haiti. The seminar offers training to improve the skills of the teaching staff at the largest higher education and research institution in the country.

Social bodies and companies at Marketplace 2011
The first reciprocal trading meeting for Catalonia’s volunteer organisations and companies brought together over 900 people and around 50 social bodies. The Campus for Peace was present at the Marketplace organised by the Federació Catalana de Voluntariat Social (Catalan Federation for Social Volunteering, FCVS) that took place on Friday 11 November at Barcelona’s Maritime Museum within the framework of the 2nd European Conference on Volunteering coordinated by the Catalan government as part of the European Year of Volunteering.

The Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe (DARE) network, which works to promote education for democratic citizenship (EDC) and human rights education (HRE), has added the UOC’s Campus for Peace to its ranks.

First steps towards the Virtual University of Cameroon
Cameroon’s leading university – Yaoundé I – and the UOC Campus for Peace have joined forces to start up a virtual university. With this aim in mind, a course entitled Virtual Teaching is to start on 25 October. This programme in French is to offer training for trainers to 80 Cameroonian lecturers.

The Campus for Peace has unveiled a virtual course for the prevention and combating of sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). The programme is designed for all those people who want to find out more about this serious problem and learn about the mechanisms to protect against this practice.

Barcelona's Palau de Congressos conference centre played host to the Second UOC Teaching Staff Institutional Conference. The event on 9 July was attended by over 1,200 UOC lecturers, tutors and counsellors, including around twenty temporary teaching staff from the School for Cooperation.

Donations from students allow for start-up of two new projects
The Campus for Peace has received a total of 12,659 euros in voluntary contributions during the first semester of 2011. These donations will be invested in the creation of two new charitable training programmes: one focusing on prevention of and protection from infant sexual exploitation, and the other on digital skills training for Haitian lecturers.

9 July will see a new country in the world: Southern Sudan. Independence from the North won nearly 99% of the votes in the referendum last February. Following two decades of civil war, this region is still one of the world's hotspots. The latest issue of the UOC Campus for Peace's Journal of Conflictology includes an interview with Kenya's first ambassador to Sudan Daniel Rachuonyo Mboya, who is hopeful for the future of Southern Sudan despite the gathering clouds of another conflict in the country.

21st-century ecological thought in the 3rd issue of EcoUniversity
The third issue of the e-journal EcoUniversity published by the Campus for Peace in Catalan dedicates its dossier to 21st-century ecological philosophy and thought. This issue includes an interview with Juan López de Uralde, former director of Greenpeace Spain and promoter of the Equo project, a socio-political movement for ecology and social equality based on a change in the development model and overcoming capitalism.

New training programmes for cooperation in Geneva
The team from the Campus for Peace’s School for Cooperation, led by its Director Eduard Vinyamata, travelled to Geneva, Switzerland, to meet with collaborating international organisations and institutions. The aim was to promote external projection and internationalisation of the cooperation training programmes.

International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development in Geneva
The Campus for Peace’s School for Cooperation attended the second International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development, where a list of recommendations was adopted to promote sport as a tool for positive change. The conference took place at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on 10 and 11 May.

Director of the Campus for Peace and lecturer in Conflictology Eduard Vinyamata defended conflictology as an alternative way of viewing conflict at the 27th Societat Andorrana de Ciències (Andorran Sciences Association, SAC) Series of Conferences. The talk was entitled Conflictology and took place on 28 April at La Llacuna Cultural Centre in Andorra.

The Fons Català to train more specialists thanks to e-learning plan
On Saturday 9 April, in Mollet del Vallès, Barcelona, the Fons Català de Cooperació en el Desenvolupament (Catalan Development Cooperation Fund) presented the e-learning plan that will let it train more specialists in municipal cooperation than when they used the traditional face-to-face course system. This initiative is to involve collaboration from the UOC’s Campus for Peace and Barcelona City Council. The course is to start in the upcoming academic year.

The conference aimed to increase citizens’ knowledge of the system for resolving conflicts without going to court.

The Cooperation Area is now a school
The Humanitarian Cooperation, Peace and Sustainability Area of the International Postgraduate Institute (IPI) has changed its name to School for Cooperation. The new designation is in keeping with “the UOC’s volition to contribute greater identity, cohesion and coherence to the area”, according to Eduard Vinyamata, director of the Campus for Peace.

The Campus for Peace has joined the new campaign of Doctors Without Borders/Médicins Sans Frontières (MSF) “Pills for other people's pain”, an aid project for the forgotten sick, who suffer from unknown diseases or diseases that have been relegated to the past such as Leishmaniasis (Black Fever), Chagas disease, sleeping sickness, tuberculosis, malaria or child AIDS.

Innovation in sustainable architecture the big winner at the Solar 2010 awards
The European Association for Renewable Energy, EUROSOLAR, rewarded Spain’s most innovative projects to use and publicise solar and other renewable energies at the ninth SOLAR awards. The prize-giving ceremony took place on 25 January 2011 at the UOC’s headquarters, with support from the Campus for Peace and Triodos Bank.

Professor David Bueno wins the 2010 European Award for the Dissemination of General Scientific Study
David Bueno, professor in the Genetics Department at the University of Barcelona (UB) and member of the Conflictology Study and Research Centre (CREC) at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC), has received the 16th European Award for the Dissemination of General Scientific Study for his book L’enigma de la llibertat. Gender equality at East-West Dialogue 2010
Some 40 university students from around the world are to take part in the 7th Catalonia Model United Nations Special Meeting UNA-Spain: East-West Dialogue 2010, organised by the Spanish United Nations Association. Those taking part are to discuss Gender Equality and Development in a simulation of the United Nations system at Barcelona’s Casa Àsia from 25 to 27 October 2010.

The UOC's Barcelonès Centre to host the International 10 Years since Military Service Conference
The UOC is to host the International 10 Years since Military Service Conference on 15 May at its Barcelonès Centre (Rambla de Catalunya 6, 2nd floor). The Conference has been organised by Moviment per la Pau and the European Bureau for Conscientious Objection, with support from the Catdem Foundation and the UOC's Campus for Peace. UOC students take part in an international simulation as United Nations diplomats
The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) Campus for Peace is to take part in the 5th International Catalonia Model United Nations (C'MUN), organised by the United Nations Association of Spain, which starts on 21 April and ends on 24 April 2010. It is a meeting that brings together more than 400 students from around the world over 4 days to take part in a simulation of the United Nations system at Barcelona's CosmoCaixa.
