Brenda Gourley was confered with an honorary doctorate by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) on February 24 in recognition of her contribution to Higher Education. Professor Brenda Gourley was Vice Chancellor and CEO of The Open University in the United Kingdom from 2002 to 2009. Before that she occupied the same position at one of South Africa's largest universities, the University of Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal). She had been at the same university occupying successive posts as Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management and Deputy Vice Chancellor, thus combining an academic career with a career in academic management ranging over thirty years through momentous changes in her own country plus momentous times in Higher Education.

Sir Timothy Berners-Lee was confered with an honorary doctorate by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) on October 10, for his contribution to the development of information technologies and, in particular, the invention of the World Wide Web in 1990, as well as the first web browser and first web server, with the principal aim of creating a network of digital content that could be shared thanks to a combination of hypertext and the internet.
