Sir Timothy Berners-Lee

Sir Timothy Berners-Lee was confered with an honorary doctorate by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) on October 10, for his contribution to the development of information technologies and, in particular, the invention of the World Wide Web in 1990, as well as the first web browser and first web server, with the principal aim of creating a network of digital content that could be shared thanks to a combination of hypertext and the internet.

Investiture of Professor Alain Touraine as a doctor honoris causa in recognition of his contribution to the analysis of the post-industrial society, relations between the university and society and, particularly, a sociological theory that focuses on the Subject as the primary source of social action.

June 9th 2006 Mr William J. Mitchell was invested as doctor honoris causa for his decisive contribution to the introduction of ICT in architecture and urban design and to the study of identity in relation to the modification of the spaces of the network society.

June 9th 2006 Right Honourable Mr Jordi Pujol i Soley was invested as doctor honoris causa in recognition of his merits in the political, economic, social, cultural and civic arenas and for having placed universities as one of the priorities of his government, during which time the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya was founded.
