The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) is an innovative university that prizes the quality of its teaching and research, a university open to people and ideas, and committed to society. As well as guaranteeing its mission to offer quality distance university education and focusing its work on the rolling out and adaptation to the European Higher Education Area, the UOC also works to respond to the changes and needs in a society that looks to make knowledge central to its social and economic wellbeing.
Our students are students of the new millennium; students born into the information society, who demand different styles of learning and who approach knowledge actively. Interdisciplinary, transversal, participatory, collaborative and cooperative work is put into practice by the UOC community on a daily basis.
We are a pioneering university in the use of information and communication technologies and we realise that we have to keep progressing and innovating. Internet ten years ago bears no relation to internet today. We aim to complete the UOC's technological transformation so as to maintain our leading position in the use of ICT. We have just inaugurated the new portal and are carrying out pilot tests on the new campus which is to include new multichannel, multimedia, multiplatform, collaborative and teaching resources.
The community includes 45,000 students, 204 lecturers, 2,000 teaching collaborators, 450 management staff and 19,261 graduates. We represent 15.4% of the Catalan university system. We are a precursor to the university of the future. We are used to overcoming difficulties. Our students combine their studies with their professional and family lives. We build and continually adapt our model; a model that has to be constructed in terms of curiosity, independence, openness, collaboration, freedom and, above all, quality.
