The UOC and the Fundación Cultura de Paz organise an event in Madrid to promote peace
[13/09/2007]
The Fundación Cultura de Paz, led by Federico Mayor Zaragoza, and the UOC's Campus per la Pau i la Solidaritat, with Eduard Vinyamata as director, are organising an event to reflect on peace. As well as the directors of both institutions, the Government Delegate in Madrid, José Cuervo, will be attending. The event will take place at the Blanquerna bookshop in Madrid (c/ Alcalá¡, 44) on 19 September at 7.30 pm.

As part of this event, the lecturer in the UOC Department of Humanities, Joan Campàs, will give the paper entitled "The deconstruction of the classical myth in Picasso's Guernica". Professor Campàs will show how Picasso, inspired by Allegory of Peace and War by Rubens, turned Guernica into a clear plea for peace. The event will take place in Madrid two days prior to World Peace Day, which is held on 21 September and which aims to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of world peace.

Campus for Peace and Solidarity
The Campus for Peace and Solidarity is the university of NGOs, the solidarity initiative of the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). The aims of the Campus for Peace and Solidarity are training, research and raising awareness using information technologies. From a university perspective, the institution boasts a pioneering pedagogical methodology that relates and enables people and organisations worldwide to improve their humanitarian and solidarity task. The channel of dissemination is a virtual campus of universal access where knowledge of a social and humanitarian application is transferred with no geographical, temporal, socio-economic, linguistic or personal barriers. The platform also integrates a database of links and specific resources and consolidates a worldwide network of virtual volunteers. Formed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals, the Campus for Peace and Solidarity provides support for the work of recognised institutions and organisations that share or complement the same aims. To date, tens of agreements have been signed whereby the Campus provides its know-how, its technological platform and a unique pedagogical methodology to agencies of the likes of Unicef, Catalan Development Cooperation Agency, Amnesty International, the Red Cross, Engineering Without Frontiers and the "la Caixa" charity work.
