The UOC carries out in-depth renovation of its portal
[13/12/2007]
The UOC has carried out an in-depth renovation of its portal, with a new graphic design, a new way of presenting the information, greater accessibility and a new structure. The new website, which is to remain in a beta version for a few weeks, can be viewed in Catalan, Spanish and English. A highlight of the most important changes implemented is its administration using an open-source content manager.

The UOC's new portal has been up and running since Thursday, December 13. The new structuring of the information allows for a more efficient targeting of the different audiences the UOC addresses. On accessing the new uoc.edu site, the first thing people find is a new, minimalist, homepage which looks to answer the following questions: What is the UOC? What can I study at the UOC? How do I study at the UOC? What does the UOC do? From this first page and via a more transversal navigation, visitors can access four co-portals or sector websites: University, Teaching, Research and Innovation and Dissemination of Knowledge.

The new graphic design is the result of great efforts to adapt to the values of quality, innovation, proximity and accessibility. The portal's development has focused, throughout, on a user-centred design methodology and usability criteria that help make it more intuitive and practical. Among other new developments, the portal includes a directory of the university?s teaching and management staff.

The most important factor in the changes made are the possibilities for continual improvement, with constant adaptation to users' needs and decentralised and independent management. This is possible thanks to the open-source content manager used: OpenCms. This process of remodelling the University's portal is the first step in the UOC's technological transformation. This process is designed to maintain its leading position in the use of ICT and free software, whilst ensuring innovation and diversity of platforms. With this in mind, there are plans to set up pilot tests of the new Virtual Campus during this academic year. The Campus is to incorporate new collaborative, multichannel, multimedia and teaching resources.
