The UOC joins forces with the New Media Consortium and translates the renowned Horizon Report into Spanish
[14/01/2008]
The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) has begun collaboration with the New Media Consortium (NMC), having joined forces last July, with the Spanish translation of the 2007 edition of the renowned Horizon Report. This annual report, produced by the NMC and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, analyses the impact of new technologies in the field of higher education. Following the recent publication of the version in Spanish, the NMC and the UOC are now working on the translation into Catalan. All these versions are produced under a Creative Commons licence to aid their dissemination.
The translation of the 2007 Horizon Report aims to make it available to the Spanish-speaking
university community and to spread its reach as far as possible, building on the fact that the
English version has already been downloaded tens of thousands of times. The report analyses the
potential for emerging technologies as tools for innovation in teaching, learning and creative
expression in higher education. Highlights of this fourth edition include user-created contents,
social networks, new uses of mobile telephones or virtual worlds, as well as the emerging forms of
publication or massively multiplayer educational games.
The technologies detailed in this edition are the result of the analysis and proposals made
by an Advisory Board made up of some twenty experts. The research and discussion process takes
place via a
wiki, where the work carried out can
be consulted or even added to with examples of each technology or new proposals.
The 2008 edition of the Horizon Report is set to be published at the end of this month. On
this occasion, Eva de Lera, from the UOC’s Educational Technology area, has formed part of
the project’s Advisory Board. This year’s edition is again to be translated into
Spanish and Catalan as part of the UOC and NMC’s collaboration.
The UOC, a university that focuses on the intensive use of information and communication
technologies in learning, is the first institution in Spain and one of the few in Europe to form
part of the NMC. This consortium is a non-profit organisation that brings together some 250
universities, companies and museums from around the world, including many of the most prestigious
universities. Its mission is to drive innovation in education through the exploration and
application of emerging technologies and media.
