The translation of the Horizon Report aims to make it available to the Spanish- and
Catalan-speaking university community and to spread its reach as far as possible, building on the
fact that the English version has tens of thousands of readers. The report analyses the potential
for emerging technologies as tools for innovation in teaching, learning and creative expression in
higher education. Highlights of this fifth edition include grassroots video and collaboration webs,
mobile broadband and data mashups, as well as collective intelligence and social operating systems.
The technologies detailed in this edition are the result of the analysis and proposals made
by an advisory board made up of more than thirty experts. This year, these include Eva de Lera from
the UOC’s Learning Technologies department. The research and discussion process takes place
via a wiki, where the work carried out can be consulted or even added to with examples of each
technology or new proposals.
This edition, and the process followed to prepare each edition of the Horizon Report, is to
be presented on the afternoon of May 21. Speakers will include Larry Johnson, CEO, NMC –via
videoconference–; Begoña Gros, Vice President, Innovation, UOC; and Eva de Lera, Senior
Strategist, Learning Technologies, UOC.
The UOC, a university that focuses on the intensive use of information and communication
technologies in learning, is the first institution in Spain and one of the few in Europe to form
part of the NMC. This consortium is a non-profit organisation that brings together more than 250
universities, companies and museums from around the world, including many of the most prestigious
universities. Its mission is to drive innovation in education through the exploration and
application of emerging technologies and media.
