The UOC's University Master's Degree Programme in Free Software is an academic degree that combines a vocational angle with a research-based approach. The skills profile taken into account in the design of this degree is very closely related to the professional skills of a technical profile (IT engineers, telecommunications engineers and other types of engineer, and generally all degrees with a strong scientific and technical basis). Nonetheless, there is a direct relationship between the contents of this degree and the lines of research in Networking technologies of the UOC doctorate programme, in which by students wishing to focus their studies on research can submit doctoral theses.

Some of the skills that students are expected to acquire are:

1. Administration of GNU/Linux systems.

2. Configuration and administration of network services in free environments with the application of security knowledge.

3. Installation and configuration of a web server.

4. Design and programming of applications with free software tools and resources.

5. Knowledge and application of legal aspects and use of free software.

6. Installation and configuration of a database management system.
