The suggestive opening lecture presented by William J. Mitchell in this issue is a possible urban future: that of the intelligent city. In doing so, Mitchell focuses, among other things, on two aspects of great importance for understanding the contemporary city and its future: on the one hand, he takes a historical-evolutional perspective; on the other, he exemplifies it using one of the key aspects not just of the organisation of today's cities but also of the global and information society: mobility.
This dossier stresses this aspect, mobility and cities, with the following contributions:
- Climbing the urban hierarchy: new forms of neo-liberal governance in Europe, by Sara González
- Cities, mobilities and technologies: towards a mobile Barcelona, by Pep Vivas and Ramon Ribera-Fumaz
- Cultural events in Catalan tourist resorts and cities, by Francesc González
- Video-surveillance mechanisms in the information society, by Jesús Rojas
- Bibliographical tools for a walk through today's cybercity, by Óscar López
