UOC offers two modules: Catalan language and literature and Contemporary Catalan History and Art.

MODULE: Catalan language and literature
ECTS credit points: 15
The module presents a combination of three courses (see below).

1. Catalan Sociolinguistics (code: 07.032)
This course introduces the main concepts and procedures of sociolinguistic inquiry, particularly those more directly applied to the study of the use of the Catalan language. It also intends to provide a framework to understand how the process of normalization of the Catalan language is developing on the basis of rigorous criteria and data. As the development of the Catalan language is often a matter of public debate, a second objective of this course is to discuss the assumptions and prejudices underlying linguistic ideologies. As a result, the course expects the students to produce an essay based on the collection or analysis of data in a particular context and to participate in an organized classroom debate.

- To look for the definition of a concept of sociology in a specialized dictionary and to relate it to the study of the languages.
- To make the text reading on different approaches from the sociolinguistic and to comment them of compared form.
- To make the analysis of the linguistic evolution of the locality of the student from already existing data.
- Report written about some text of sociolinguistic.
- Written work to value sociolinguistic data from different points of view.

2. Contemporary Catalan poetry (code: 07.064)
This course consists of a reader in contemporary Catalan poetry. There is a first lesson involving a conventional introduction to the most recent poets of Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. This is followed by guided readings (through special work-guides) of particular works. The works can change every semester. So far, we have studied the following: Vicent Andrés Estellés: Coral romput, Miquel Martí i Pol: Antologia poètica, Joan Brossa, Cappare, Francesc Parcerisas: L'edat d'or, Narcís Comadira: Enigma; M. Mercè Marçal: Cau de llunes, Enric Casassas: Calç, Carles Torner: Viure després. We also invite at least one of the authors to participate in a debate with the students in our virtual classroom.

- To choose and to analyze a poem non studied in class.
- To analyze, as a whole, a poem book.
- Reading and commentary of a poetic work and participation in a virtual debate with the author.
- To choose five poems of Catalan Literature freely, to comment it and to argue the election.

3. Catalan literature: theory and criticism (code: 07.017)
This course could also be called “A Catalan poetics of the 20th Century”. It approaches a number of Catalan writers of the last century through the particular perspective of their poetics or ideas on literary theory. We usually study authors on the basis of their works, from which we try to figure out their ideas about literature. In this course, however, we look directly into the poetics of the various authors on the basis of the texts (introductions, forewords, lectures) in where they present their own literary visions, discuss their preferred genres, and reflect upon the creative process and about the meaning of their own work to them. The format of the course is not conventional either. Instead of providing a study manual with an extensive theoretical elaboration, what we propound is a process of reading and reflection on the basis of the relevant texts, in this case, the theoretical or programmatic reflections of writers whose work has been very influential in Catalan literature. Thus, the study materials provide an anthology of the texts, accompanied with annotations and commentaries to support and inform the reading process through which the main themes emerge.

MODULE: Contemporary Catalan History and Art

The module presents a combination of three courses (see below)

1. Contemporary history II (code: 04.157)
This course focuses on 20th Century world history, of which the most important events are studied: the inter-war period, the Second World War, decolonization and the Cold War. Students are required to: 1. Identify the most important historical developments from 1918 onwards. 2. Describe the most important themes of the four sections, so that they know how to locate any event in its own period. 3. Identify the main historical narrative threads in each section. 4. Build on these themes or threads to debate political and socioeconomic issues. 5. Build an global understanding of historical events in this period, even when the starting point is in the Western world. 6. Learn how to use cartographic references whenever possible. The coursework is based on the analysis of historical texts and a final essay on the Nazi movement or the decolonization process.

The continued evaluation has three activities with the next objectives:
- To value the aptitude to establish comparisons between next political models, and the aptitude to adapt the theoretical knowledge acquired to historical texts.
- To identify the principal sociocultural changes produced in the decades of 1960-1970. To explain causes, phases and models of the process of decolonization.
- To know the different models of decolonization and the emergence of the so-called Third World.

2. History of Catalonia II (code: 04.139)
This course intends to provide an overall picture of historical developments in Catalonia from the 16th to the 20th Centuries within the European and Spanish contexts, which are essential to understand the backdrop of Catalan historical processes. The course covers two main periods: a) “modern” Catalan history (16th to 18th C.), that is, the time characterized by the contradictions between, on the one hand, the development of the new Hispanic state based on absolutist centralization (as was the trend in many European monarchies) and, on the other hand, the traditional political system sanctioned by the Catalan constitutions; and b) “contemporary” Catalan history (19th and 20th C.) up to the Franco regime, the last period in which a certain interpretive distance can be projected. The latter period provides an overview of the construction of the modern liberal Spanish state, the limitations of Spain’s bourgeois revolution and the resulting weak nationalization process that will give rise to national movements in the periphery. The coursework is based on the analysis of historical texts and a book review.

- To develop a questionnaire from a reading.
- Comparison of historical texts on nationalism and labor to the beginning of XXth century.
- To answer to a questionnaire about the material of the subject and the realized debates.

3. History of Art II (code: 04.144)
This course is an overview of art history from the Baroque period to the present, with a special emphasis on Catalan art and with an interdisciplinary approach. The work of art, as a constructive, communicative and interactive need of a politically and historically situated society, is always connected in complex ways with other forms of cultural expression and must be studied taking into account sociopolitical, literary, philosophic, religious and other life-world conditions. Although the course is presented as exploring developments from a chronological perspective, in practice we devote most of the time to the 20th Century. The coursework involves an essay on the avant-gardes, the analysis of various works and a final project focused on one particular net-artist.

MODULE: Llengua i literatura catalanes

El mòdul està fotmat per la combinació de tres cursos.

1. Sociolingüística catalana (codi: 07.032)
Aquesta assignatura pretén que els estudiants es familiaritzin amb els conceptes i procediments principals de la sociolingüística, amb especial èmfasi en aquells que s’han aplicat en l’estudi de l’ús de la llengua catalana. En aquest context, també es pretén que els estudiants arribin a un coneixement fonamentat en criteris i dades contrastades sobre les perspectives del procés de normalització o recuperació del català. Com que el procés de recuperació de la llengua catalana és objecte de polèmica pública regular, un segon objectiu clau d’aquesta assignatura és que els estudiants se sàpiguen situar en aquests debats, aprenent a qüestionar els pressupòsits i prejudicis en què es fonamenten les ideologies lingüístiques. Per això l’estudi d’aquesta assignatura consisteix principalment en la realització d’un treball basat en l’anàlisi d’algun tipus de dades de dades i en la participació en un debat.

- Cercar la definició d'un concepte de sociologia en un diccionari especialitzat i relacionar-lo amb l'estudi de les llengües.
- Fer una lectura de textos amb apropaments diferents a la sociolingüística i comentar-los de forma comparada.
- Fer una anàlisi de l’evolució lingüística de la població de l'estudiant a partir de dades ja existents.
- Fer un informe escrit sobre algun text de sociolingüística.
- Treball escrit que valori dades sociolingüístiques des de diferents punts de vista.

2. Poesia catalana actual (codi: 07.064)
L’assignatura està concebuda com un reader. Tret del mòdul 1, que és convencional (una introducció a la poesia de les darreres dècades a Catalunya, el País Valencià i les Illes), la resta són guies o fitxes de treball i de lectura dels materials (poemaris i articles). Els llibres estudiats són: Vicent Andrés Estellés: Coral romput, Miquel Martí i Pol: Antologia poètica, Joan Brossa, Cappare, Francesc Parcerisas: L'edat d'or, Narcís Comadira: Enigma; M. Mercè Marçal: Cau de llunes, Enric Casassas: Calç, Carles Torner: Viure després. Preveiem que un dels autors participi en l’aula virtual per tal de comentar amb els estudiants el seu llibre durant la setmana en què aquest sigui objecte de discussió.

- Analitzar, en conjunt, un llibre de poemes.

3. Literatura catalana: teoria i critica (codi: 07.017)
Aquesta assignatura, que hem subtitulat “Poètiques del segle XX”, vol ser una aproximació a uns quants escriptors catalans de la passada centúria. Però una aproximació poc usual. Generalment, s’estudien els autors a partir de l’anàlisi de les seves obres, de les quals s’intenta d’extreure els trets principals i comuns amb l’objecte de caracteritzar el que s’anomena la seva poètica o concepció de la literatura. En aquesta assignatura el propòsit és d’apropar-se a les poètiques de diversos autors, però a partir d’aquests autors mateixos, és a dir: a partir de l’estudi d’aquells textos (pròlegs, conferències, etc.) en què els escriptors reflexionen sobre la seva pròpia concepció de la literatura, o sobre el gènere que conreen, o sobre el procés creatiu, o sobre les pròpies obres, etc. Són aquests textos, aquestes poètiques formulades, l’objecte d’estudi del present curs. L’assignatura es presenta, d’altra banda, en un format ben diferent respecte al de les més convencionals. En lloc de l’acostumada exposició teòrica de continguts, s’ha volgut muntar el material d’estudi partint de l’aplicació pràctica del que ha de ser el principi fonamental de la carrera de Filologia: ensenyar a llegir. I, en aquest cas, el que es pretén d’ensenyar a llegir als estudiants no són les obres de creació dels escriptors, sinó els seus textos teòrics o programàtics –els quals constitueixen una part important de la nostra literatura. Amb aquest fi, s’ha organitzat l’assignatura al damunt d’una antologia d’aquests textos, acompanyats dels respectius comentaris; uns comentaris que no són sinó exercicis pràctics de lectura, per mitjà dels quals són exposats els continguts referents a la poètica de cada autor. El curs, així, combina l’exposició teòrica amb l’aplicació pràctica.

MODULE: Història i art contemporanis de Catalunya

El mòdul està fotmat per la combinació de tres cursos.

1. Història contemporània II (codi: 04.157)
L'assignatura Història contemporània II se centra en la història del segle XX. D'aquest període s'estudiaran els fets més transcendentals: el període d'entreguerres, la Segona Guerra Mundial, la descolonització i la Guerra Freda. Pel que fa als continguts, els objectius més rellevants són els següents: 1. Diferenciar els períodes i els fenòmens més importants del segle XX a partir de 1918. 2. Descriure els temes més importants dins de cadascun dels quatre mòduls, aprendre a situar qualsevol esdeveniment important dins del seu període. 3. Destacar els fils argumentals proposats a cada tema. 4. Procurar ampliar mitjançant debats i exercicis l'abast dels diferents temes insistint en el fil argumental i els aspectes socioeconòmics. 5. Tenir present el marc general del conjunt del planeta, tot i que la primera referència sigui el món occidental. 6. Utilitzar, sempre que es pugui, referències cartogràfiques. El treball de curs es basa en el comentari de textos històrics i un treball sobre el moviment nazi o la descolonització.

Avaluació continuada amb tres exercicis amb els objectius següents:
- Avaluar la capacitat d’establir comparacions entre models polítics propers, i la capacitat per adaptar el coneixement teòric adquirit a textos històrics.
- Identificar els canvis socioculturals principals produïts en les dècades de 1960-1970. Explicar les causes, fases i models del procés de descolonització.
- Conèixer els models diferents de descolonització i l’aparició de l’anomenat Tercer Món.

2. Història de Catalunya II (codi: 04.139)
Amb l'estudi d'aquesta assignatura, obtindreu una visió integradora de l'evolució històrica de Catalunya dels segles XVI al XX, emmarcada en el context europeu i espanyol sense el qual no entendríem l'autèntic rerafons del tarannà històric de Catalunya. L'assignatura integra dues etapes: el que anomenaríem Història Moderna de Catalunya, que ocupa entre els segles XVI i XVIII i que constitueix un període durant el qual es viuen les contradiccions inherents al procés de desplegament d'un nou estat hispànic que aspira a l'absolutisme centralitzador, -com era propi a l'Europa de les monarquies europees de l'època-, i que per aquest motiu s'enfronta al sistema polític tradicional sancionat per les constitucions catalanes. i la Història Contemporània de Catalunya, del segle XIX al XX, aquesta part fins al franquisme, que és la darrera època sobre la qual en tenim percepció històrica amb certa distància. És aquest darrer, doncs, un recorregut per la construcció de l'estat liberal modern espanyol, pels límits de la revolució burgesa a Espanya i pel feble procés de nacionalització espanyol que permetrà l'emergència i consolidació dels nacionalismes perifèrics. El treball de curs es basa en el comentari de textos històrics i una recensió sobre un llibre.

- Realitzar el qüestionari d’una lectura.
- Comparació de textos històrics sobre nacionalisme I obrerisme a l’inici del segle XX.
- Respondre un qüestionari sobre l`’objecte d’estudi I els debats realitzats.

3. Història de l’Art II (codi: 04.144)
Aquesta matèria abasta des del Barroc fins a l'actualitat, posant un èmfasi especial en el llegat artístic català i amb una orientació interdisciplinària envers el fet artístic. L'obra d'art, com a necessitat constructiva, comunicativa o interactiva d'una societat d'un lloc i d'un temps concrets, s'interrelaciona amb les altres formes d'expressió cultural i s'estudia amb les aportacions de fonts sociopolítiques, literàries, filosòfiques, religioses, de la vida quotidiana... Malgrat el caràcter diacrònic de l'assignatura, es dedica més de la meitat del curs a estudiar el segle XX. El treball de curs conté un assaig sobre les avantguardes, el comentari de diverses obres i un projecte sobre un net-artista.
