Ana Sofía Cardenal Izquierdo

Ana S. Cardenal is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the Open University of Catalonia and she is also afiliated to the Pompeu Fabra University, where she teaches a Comparative Politics course. She has been a visiting scholar at the Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford University and Fulbright Fellow at the Department of Politics at New York University (NYU).


Her doctoral thesis was about the process of transition to democracy in El Salvador, which was published in the form of a book entitled: Democracy and land. Political change in El Salvador (CIS, Collection: Monographs, No. 187, 2002). She has worked as a consultant and lived in Guatemala linked to a project on the modernization of labor institutions in eight countries of Central America, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), among other international organizations. She is co-editor (together with S. Martin) of the book Central America, the uncertain democracies (Barcelona: UAB-Tecnos, 1998).


Currently, her research is found in the intersection between communication and political science. Her research areas focus on the effects of digital media on online audiences, the processes of public opinion formation, online political information and its effects on parties and voting, and empirical methods. On these topics she has published in international scientific journals such as Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, Journal of Information, Technology and Politics, Party Politics, Policy & Internet.
