The world in which we live is in a process of constant changes that affect all professional fields and, particularly, the field of education and training. It is vital to find new solutions to the increasingly complex problems these changes pose and, additionally, it is necessary to do so at a time and rhythm that are appropriate. Information is the key element in the current process of change. We need to turn that information into knowledge and that, in its turn, into wisdom for people. New society makes it necessary for us to learn throughout our lives, to be continually training. For that to be possible, it is necessary to have very diverse structures that take proper advantage of new formats for information and documentation that allow us to overcome the barriers of time and space imposed by former structures. These new structures are possible thanks to the use of technology and will only be successful if they are placed at people's service and help to construct environments that are flexible, interactive, immediate and personalised, environments that would have been unthinkable previously. The pillars of this new society are virtuality, globality and ubiquity, aspects that make for a new renaissance, and can contribute to the elimination of the digital divide and the overcoming of the linguistic and cultural barriers that exist throughout the world.
