Abstract:

Taking as a starting point the fact that new technologies are not a tool of work but an art in themselves, and considering the creative abilities of those elaborating them, a new clearly technological but also creative culture is foreseeable for the twenty-first century, one which crosses the historical divide between the world of technology and the world of art. It was in precisely this sense that the I2CAT research project came into being, a programme which aims to create an experimental platform for artistic projects in Catalonia, via the Internet's next generation, or Internet 2, which permits the integration of audio, video and any form of virtual reality and face-to-face collaboration on the Web. In particular, the "Media House" project -a house with the structure of a computer- aims to point towards new forms possible for architecture, while the "Open Opera" project -the first transmission of an opera via Internet 2- aims to open up new forms of expression for art and stage. Thanks to its relationship with art, Internet 2 technology, more advanced than what we have at present, could in the future reach people who are at a technological disadvantage and who still do not currently have access to the Internet. It would also permit the development of a new digital art that would not be limited to the Web and that would mean that new physical spaces would be opened in cities to accommodate these artistic communications.
