This article takes an in-depth look at the advantages of free software in the public sector. We look in detail at the difference between free, open source software, licences for proprietary software and the development models of free software. Close analysis is made of the repercussions of the use of solutions of this kind on cost, local industry, technological innovation, language and privacy. Finally, we look at the cases of the Junta de Extremadura and Brazil as examples of public administrations that are benefiting from the use of free software.
