In 1997, two years after its arrival as the world's first online university, the UOC received the European Union's Bangemann Challenge Award for the best European distance education initiative.

The IN3 became a member of the Global Network of Internet and Society Research Centers (NoC), which brings together interdisciplinary research centres whose central research focus is the knowledge society and internet.
