Statement by the presidents of the Catalan public universities

We, the undersigned, presidents of the Catalan public universities, faced with the current situation in Catalonia, condemn the coercive actions against the freedom of expression seen in recent days.

We call for dialogue as the only possible way of achieving understanding in democracy – based on the belief that freedom of expression and respect for others and for the law are essential and irrevocable pillars of democracy.

The universal scope of universities means we have to look to fundamental values that uphold people’s rights and social harmony. All authorities and institutions must act with the utmost respect for these values that are essential to democracy and freedom.
