Over the last few weeks, we have followed with great concern the news of the brutal repression of freedom in Iran that has come in response to the people's protests over the death of Mahsa Amini while she was in police custody for wearing an improper hijab. The UOC wishes to express its condemnation of the violence against Iranian women defending their rights and against the people taking part in the peaceful protests in Iran. This is a clear violation of democratic principles and people's right to freedom of expression.
We also endorse the statements in support of Iranian women and in defence of their rights and freedoms made by the Women and Science Commission of the Catalan Interuniversity Council (CIC), the Catalan Public University Association (ACUP) and the Spanish Conference of University Rectors (CRUE).
In particular, we would like to express our support and solidarity for the Iranian members of our university's community at this difficult time of anxiety and uncertainty regarding the wellbeing of friends and family. We share your pain, and we have you in our hearts and in our minds.
You have our full support and our very best wishes.
