David Martínez Robles obtained a PhD in History from Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in 2007 and a degree in Philosophy from the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1996. He has been a senior lecturer in the Arts and Humanities Department of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) and a temporary part-time lecturer in UPF’s Humanities Department since 2003. His most recent books notably include Sinibaldo de Mas y la empresa colonial europea en China (Marcial Pons, 2018), Narratives xineses: ficcions i altres formes de no-literatura (with Carles Prado, Editorial UOC, 2008) and La lengua china: historia signo y contexto (Editorial UOC, 2007). He is a member of ALTER: Crisi, Alteritat i Representació, a research group attached to the UOC’s Arts and Humanities Department.

His research has revolved around the study of the cultural factors involved in European imperialists’ acts in China in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among other aspects, he has analysed the processes in which mechanisms for developing knowledge of the Other are established, the narratives that historiography has used to represent China, and the cultural negotiation involved in international relations in eastern Asia in the period in question.
