PhD programme on the Information
and Knowledge Society
Third cycle programme

Qualification

Taking the PhD programme on the Information and Knowledge Society consists of writing, presenting and defending a PhD thesis, which consists of original research work in one of the fields of the programme. This means that the aims and planning are specific to each PhD student.

The UOC will allocate each candidate(s) admitted to the PhD programme a thesis director(s), a member of a research group or researcher, who will oversee the student's academic development. Even though the PhD does not contemplate the need to meet a certain number of teaching credits, the thesis directors may recommend that students take courses (methodological but also substantive in nature) if they feel it is necessary for the PhD student's education.

To ensure the quality of the PhD theses, the PhD Commission establishes the minimum criteria for admitting the PhD thesis for analysis. When applying for admission to the reading process, the student must accredit that the research results they are presenting are supported by the scientific community with publications in scientific journals, participation at conferences, etc. Before a thesis is admitted for analysis, it will be assessed by two external experts who must accredit its quality.

Study system

Once an application has been admitted, the student will enrol in the first academic year of the PhD programme. Successive annual enrolments will be determined by the validation of their thesis director and the approval of the PhD Commission.

If a PhD student who has been admitted wants to change research group or line, they will have to submit a new candidature for the PhD programme.
