The gender gap on Wikipedia is clear for all to see: under 11% of its editors are women (as highlighted by a survey the Wikimedia Foundation conducted in 2015). We want to turn things around: alongside various activities happening on 8 March, we’re teaming with Liquen Data Lab, Visual404, Mujeres Y Música (MYM) and Sala Apolo to organize an edit-a-thon on art and feminism, with collaboration from Amical Wikimedia and Wikimujeres.
What is the Art+Feminism edit-a-thon?
Our Art+Feminism edit-a-thon is a marathon session to create, update and improve Wikipedia pages on women, feminism and art. It’s an activity framed within the global Art+Feminism campaign, which every month of March for the last five years has brought together organizers and new editors to explain how to edit and improve Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia.
A lack of representation and gender diversity on Wikipedia, where only 17% of the biographies are of women, has caused knowledge gaps and systematic bias. In part this is due to the low number of women editors. The idea behind the edit-a-thon is to highlight this lack of content relating to women and art and to do something about changing it. The event focuses on creating, translating and improving pages on subjects related to gender, art, femenism and technology.
