Summary
This thesis outlines some directions to promote improvements in the academic support addressed to students in online higher education. Furthermore, we address the inclusion of all students through the application of Universal Design in course design and teaching. Therefore, although the thesis is aimed at improving the inclusion processes addressed to students with disabilities, its implications reach all the diversity of online students. We also discuss the main lines of research, which should focus on aspects such as age, gender, social or ethnic background and the severity of student disability, as well as on exploring the professors' insight regarding the application of the Universal Design in every course. We close the thesis with recommendations aimed at improving the processes of inclusion in the University in areas such as curriculum design, assessment, teaching, support, collaboration, and the promotion of the sense of community.
