Research Assessment Registry (RAR) Roundtable with Marta Aymerich

Marta Aymerich, UOC Vice President for Strategic Planning and Research, will participate in a european roundtable about Research Assessment Registry netx 9th of May.

One ambition from the European Commission’s Final Report of the Open Science Policy Platform is the creation of a Research Assessment Registry (RAR) to capture experiments in research assessment that incentivise open contributions to a shared research knowledge system. The registry will complement and build on work by others in the space to encourage experimentation and increase communication for academic assessment reform.

A Research Assessment Registry (RAR) will help fuel innovation in research assessment by providing an evidence base for what works and does not in multiple contexts and settings. Importantly, the registry will capture the intention and any subsequent outcomes (positive and negative) of changes to research assessment in sufficient detail to record, analyse and share with others. Pre-registration of the intended change will ensure that policy changes and/or experiments will include those that have the desired effect but also those experiments or trials with unintended consequences or inconclusive/negative results. This model of pre-registration has been very successful, for example, in the design and implementation of clinical trials (clinicaltrials.gov), and so a similar, but adapted, approach is planned here.
