Democracy, Technology and Global Justice

The future faces enormous uncertainty. Not only because of the pandemic and its impact on a global scale, but also because of the multiple scenarios opening up in the midst of the digital society. Technological development is changing the economy, relations of power, models of governance, or our relations with the planet itself as we move towards an increasingly hyper-connected and interdependent society. The design of technologies and how they permeate society unfolds uncertain futures. On the one hand we find sophisticated mechanisms of control and surveillance and complex systems of data mining and exploitation, and on the other practices of resistance, emancipation and collective defence, and even global justice itself.

The debate about the future of technology is the debate about the future of society and how it is organised and governed. If we consider the global dimension, both in terms of the scale on which networks operate and the impacts they have on the planet, these debates are even more urgent in the face of the serious climate crisis. Thus, democracy and technology are presented as two ideas that cannot be dissociated if we want to think of a future where technology is made from and with the people. These are the debates we want to open in Decidim Fest 2021, an opportunity for an open debate on a global scale to address all these issues based on the experience and principles of the Decidim project.
