Next Tuesday 23 July, from 10 to de 11:30 am, eLearn Center will host the research seminar 'Trayectorias y experiencias del estudiantado virtual en educación superior: Análisis del caso de los grados de Ingeniería Informática, Psicología, Administración de Empresas de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya' by Pablo Rivera.

The seminar will present the preliminary results of the research “Ser estudiante universitario en contextos virtuales: Vivencias y relatos del estudiantado sobre la experiencia de realizar su formación bajo la modalidad Elearning. Caso de la Universitat Oberta de Cataluña”.

The seminar will be in Spanish.

The research, which aims at exploring and understanding the meanings and intentions of the actions of virtual students, has been developed at UOC during the first semester 2013, with students of the following studies: Computer Sciences, Psychology and Business Administration.

The seminar will examine how e-learning is intended to be an element of mediation between the transformations that occur in higher education and the virtual students, all from their own perceptions and experiences. During the seminar, an analysis of the first interviews to the mentioned students will be presented, according to categories such as:

  • Motivations for online and UOC studies
  • Personal expectations with respect to the current degree
  • Digital competencies in online learning
  • Confidence of the student in the institution and the educational model

The research is part of the doctoral thesis of Pablo Rivera Vargas, Doctoral Program in Education and Society at the University of Barcelona, and whose supervision at the UOC is under the responsibility of Dr. Montse Guitert.

Pablo Rivera is a sociologist. He has been professor at Chilean universities and is currently a researcher at the Universitat de Barcelona and at the UOC. He started his research internship at the eLC last February, which will finish at the end of July.
