Program
Ports play an important role in generating wealth and revitalising trade. Containerized goods transport is one of the agents of trade and globalisation changes. Over the last years, container ships have been increasing in size, however, it is not the case for the container yards, becoming the bottleneck. There are three main problems in the containers yard. First, “pre marshalling”, where, before the arrival of a ship, containers can be relocated in the yard in the same order by which they will be loaded later, minimising the amount of non productive movements in the container blocks. The second problem, “retrieval and reshuffling”, where the objective is to minimise non productive movements once the ship is already loading/unloading containers. Finally, the objective of the third problem is to optimise yard crane movements in order to obtain a sequence for the extraction of the containers inside the yard.
