Historical exhibition: Computation, from the abacus to the PC

The UOC, through its Computing, Multimedia and Telecommunication Studies (EIMT), collaborates in the organization of the historical exhibition entitled "Computation, from the abacus to the PC", that can be visited during the month of June of this year in the Rector Gabriel Ferraté Library of the North Campus of the UPC. This exhibition is an evolution and expansion of two previous ones, the first one organized in 2013 by the EIMT to celebrate their 15 years, and the second one organized in 2016 to inaugurate the new building of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT) of the University of the Rioja, center that also collaborates.

On this occasion, the new exhibition is part of the activities scheduled to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) of the UPC, one of the dean university centers training in computing in Catalonia and Spain. The inauguration of the exhibition will be next Wednesday 31-5-2017 at 13.00 in this library, and will be attended by the Rectors of the UOC and the UPC, in addition to the Director of the EIMT, and the Deans of the FCT and the FIB, among other authorities. Before this official opening, and of the 5 weeks in the central library of the UPC, the exhibition has been on show for 3 weeks in the shopping center L'Illa Diagonal in Barcelona; later, and during the next academic year, it is very likely that it will be traveling around other Catalan universities outside Barcelona.

The exhibition shows an extensive and varied set of machines, instruments and objects related to computing throughout history, from the ancient abacus to the first personal computers. For this last edition of the exhibition, a comprehensive web space has been developed in three languages, and a catalog in Catalan, where the exhibited pieces are classified in eight thematic areas and each one located in its respective historical context. This and previous editions have been prepared thanks to the generous dedication of many people from different units of the three universities involved.
