Despite its simplicity, the VNS (Variable Neighborhood Search) metaheuristic has been shown to be very effective in combinatorial and global optimization. It is based on a systematic change in the structure of neighborhoods, both in the improvement phase to reach a local optimum and in the perturbation phase to escape its attraction. VNS has been applied successfully to a large number of optimization problems with real-life applications, offering high-quality solutions within reasonable computing time. It is particularly useful in supporting decision making in this area, at the strategic, tactical and operative levels, given its excellent performance in a great variety of logistical planning problems. Several experimental comparative analyses have shown the superiority of heuristic algorithms obtained using this young metaheuristic, versus standard problem solving alternatives for logistical optimization. We examine the essential elements in the successful application of VNS to the most pertinent logistical optimization problems and review the most pertinent contributions in the literature.
