Program

“We are like children, we need to be guided in this world”: Barriers to Internet use faced by grannies

Abstract:
Despite decreases in the digital divide, older adults remain as a population that experience difficulties in overcoming the barriers that emerge in the use of the Internet. In this study we focus on grandmothers over 65 years old who access the Internet from at least one device in six different countries: Peru, Colombia, Romania, Israel, Italy and Spain. The goal is to identify the cross-cultural barriers faced by older adults that are already Internet users. Using qualitative data through focus groups, we discuss the psychological, physical, socioeconomic and attitudinal barriers that persist among these groups and how these shape grandmothers’ use of the Internet.
