The Gender and ICT (GenTIC) research group of the IN3 is pleased to invite you to this open seminar to the academic community and also the general public. It will consist of two presentations by Janet Hyde (Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Milagros Sáinz (Director of the Gender & ICT research group at the UOC).
The seminari will be held in English and is part of the dissemination activities of the research project GESTEMI (for further information, visit the project website: http://www.gender-ict.net/gestemi/). GESTEMI has the main purpose of analysing the effect of a series of interventions on how to improve and increase girls’ interest in STEM subjects and occupations. This objective is aligned to the challenge “Changes and Social Innovations” included in the Spanish Strategy of Science and Technology and of Innovation (2013-2020).

Program
Summary:
Recent studies conducted both in our context and beyond demonstrate the existence of gender inequalities in STEM fields (associated with power and decision-making-related occupations). In addition, they suggest the implementation of interventions strongly linked to solid theories enabling substantial and sustainable changes in order to promote equal opportunities between men and women in scientific and technological settings, where women are highly underrepresented. Moreover, those women who remain in STEM fields tend to play a secondary role, not reaching the same professional development nor equivalent salary than their male counterparts.
Programme:
10:00 – 10:15 Welcome and opening by Pastora Martínez (UOC’s Vice President for Globalization and Cooperation).
10:20 – 11:30 How to Increase the Representation of Women in STEM. Janet Hyde (University of Wisconsin, USA).

11:45 – 12:45 Interventions to increase women interest in STEM. Milagros Sáinz (Director of GenTIC research group, UOC).
