Because it was set up in 1995 as the first higher education institution designed from scratch to operate entirely online, at a time when only 0.4% of the world's population had access to the internet, ahead of the digital age.

The UOC is a university that provides a public service and is managed privately. It is part of the Catalan and Spanish university systems. The degrees offered are official and are endorsed by the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU) and Spain's National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA).

The UOC's programmes and courses have been accredited by national and international quality seals (the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency, AQU-AUDIT, the Spanish Universities Council, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, TedQual and Euro-Inf). We are the first Catalan university with institutional accreditation, which allows us to certify all official bachelor's and master's degrees taught here.
