2018 Right to Food Week

Keeping different places’ culinary traditions alive fosters more responsible consumption using typical, local and seasonal food. Therefore, between 26 November and 2 December 2018, the UOC will be staging their fourth Right to Food Week with the motto: “Sustainability, local cuisine and culture”.

The University is once again participating in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting the twelfth SDG, which seeks to ensure sustainable consumption and production, as well as the goals of protecting underwater life and terrestrial ecosystems.

Throughout the week, experts from the UOC will be active on social media, offering advice, information, resources and interesting facts and figures that will help us discover what traditional cooking is and why local cuisine is so important for sustainability.

We will also be hosting two on-site activities to promote the preservation of local cuisine. The first will be held in Barcelona on 27 November at the former Estrella Damm brewery. It will be titled “The present and future of Catalan cuisine: gastronomy, culture, sustainability". Chef Ada Parellada; chef and TV presenter, Marc Ribas; chefs from the Disfrutar restaurant; restaurateur Víctor Quintillà; and F. Xavier Medina, food anthropologist at the UOC, will discuss the present and future of Catalan cuisine. Attendance to the event is free but prior registration is required.

The second event, which will be held at the Gabinete Literario in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will be the “Symposium on food, traditional cuisine and health: towards local and sustainable models”. The event will bring together specialists in nutrition and gastronomy to tackle the importance of local produce and cuisine to keep traditional recipes and local and traditional products alive, as well as to contribute to regional economic development and the maintenance of family businesses that would otherwise find it difficult to access the commercial circuit. Participation in the event is free but prior registration is required.
