Abstract

The ultimate goal in most of the discrete event simulation studies is to perform scenario-oriented experiments to obtain the most appropriate model’s configuration. Many of the existing commercial simulation packages are equipped with an optimizer (i.e. OptQuest or COMPASS) to handle such parametric experiments. These optimizers can efficiently explore multiple designs of the model by changing the parametric controls, and determine the best combination of the model inputs. However, these optimizers are not capable of optimizing models with data-table controls in an efficient manner. In this study, a generic simulation-optimization platform is developed to tackle this pitfall, and include the ability to run simulation experiments with multiple data-table settings. The designed platform is a threefold integration of simulation, optimization, and a data transfer module by using Simio, MATLAB, and Excel respectively. This scheme is designed to obtain the optimal/close-to-optimal data-table input of a given simulation model in an efficient manner. The usefulness of this model is demonstrated by a few case studies in different applications including, sequencing, scheduling, patients’ appointment planning, and healthcare layout optimization.

Biography

Mohammad Dehghani is Assistant Teaching Professor of Mechanical and Industrial engineering at Northeastern University (Boston, USA). He received his Ph.D. in Engineering Management from Western New England University (USA) in 2016. His doctoral dissertation was focused on developing a novel Iterative Optimization-based Simulation (IOS) model which received the Best PhD Student Paper Award from the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC 2015), and IEOM Doctoral Dissertation Competition Award-2nd place (2016). His research is mainly focused on solving stochastic, non-linear and, large-scale problems using simulation-optimization (SO), data analytics, and stochastic programming with applications in healthcare operations, supply chains, and manufacturing.
